At the “El Tesorillo de Escóznar” site, different phases of occupation were detected, from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.
The phase most related to the olive-growing past of our region is located in the ancient Roman Empire, between the Flavian era until the end of the 3rd AD.
The town, belonging to the municipality of Florentia Iliberritana, based its economy on ceramics and the production of olive oil. So much so that it is believed that it housed the oldest oil mill (Torcularia) in the region.
As for the rest of the empire, EVOO had a predominant place in the region’s economy… In addition to food, the oil was used as fuel for lighting and cosmetics. It also began to be used to heal wounds, ulcers, reduce fever or calm colic.
In the excavations, a basin was found where the oil from the pressing and the base of that press were dumped. Press bases made of stone also appeared.
